In September 2019, I was on a restful vacation when I had an idea. The idea felt so powerful that it began to build and build. I could not wait to share my thoughts with David Micallef and Steve Hamilton-Clark, my colleagues. I felt intuitively that the world was about to change and would never be the same again. I remember sharing the seed that was to become Henka with Dave and Steve. They both loved the idea and shared my vision for making organisations better places to be and the way in which they were led. We all saw that Command and Control leadership was old and dying, and we knew it was time for Collaborate and Cultivate to be born through Coaching to make them more sustainable. Four months later The Henka Institute™ was born.
Two weeks ago, our dream transpired, through the most unlikely of times. We received the Rolls Royce accreditation by the International Coach Federation to get an ACTP - Accredited Coach Training Programme. This programme allows us to begin the journey of changing the way organisations are led by embracing Leader as Coach.
It made me realise how important it is for Leaders to Dream. At the best of times, Leadership is motivational. The best leaders don’t order people to do a job, the best leaders motivate people to want to do the job.
I have however realised that the vast majority of leaders don’t delve into the deep aspects of human motivation and so are unable to uncover the triggers that motivate people effectively. Brent Filson, put it so aptly when he says: “Drill down through goals and aims and aspirations and ambitions and you hit the bedrock of motivation, the dream”
As I have come to realise, dreams are something very different from goals and aims. Although the dream might contain goals, it really is about something much bigger. Dreams are about aspirations and ambitions…a desire.
In the words of Napeoleon Hill “Desire is the starting point of all achievement. Not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.
This is the challenge for Leadership- to speak to people’s aspirations and ambitions. It challenges Leaders to Be Human and to lead Humans – Human, with their own dreams and desires. Acquiring this understanding is critical to transform people and ultimately organisations.
Data gathered from the Harvard Business School from nearly 50, 000 leaders learned “the ability to inspire creates the highest levels of employee engagement and commitment.”
I am a firm believer that Leading with Authenticity is one of the most critical aspects of an Inspirational Leader.
Sharing your own dreams, desires and ambitions with your colleagues, not only make you Human…it is in that sharing that you actually awaken the fire within those you connect with – it is infectious – no one can be left “cold” if you speak with passion and vision for yourself and those around you.
This is actually for me the bottomline of Leadership. Because Leadership is not about a position, it is about the inspiration. I want to challenge you to share your dreams and hopes…share the seed that you desire to cultivate…it is powerful!
